no, Mary Ann, this isn't Pedernal, but it is a mountain on Ghost Ranch. This September will be my fourth workshop there. The colors and scenery are to die for! I like using gel medium because of the texture, especially when thrown on haphazardly, so that it's not an even coverage. I have used the other surfaces you mentioned, but then it's an overall slicknes, which I don't want.

A very nice depiction of the red clay and the textures of the mountain. I was at the Ghost Ranch a number of years ago. Is this the mountain where Georgia O'Keefe had her ashes strewn? It was so windy when I was there that we couldn't paint outside without anchoring our easels to the ground. I said that her ashes must be in New Jersey by now!
Do you often paint with on gesso with watercolor? I find many of the paintings to be too textured unless you sand the gesso to a fine finish. It does allow for instant correction, however.
Have you tried watercolor canvas? The same thing applies. It is very forgiving. Also Claybord is fun. And another newer surface called Rtistx board is my current favorite. It is fun to experiment with the watercolor medium.
