The Coliseum in the rain
by: Mary Ann

I had always wanted to see the Coliseum, and I had only one afternoon to see as much of Rome as I could. By the time I approached the Coliseum, the skies opened up and it poured rain so hard that I could hardly see across the street. I waited out the storm while having a gelato under the cover of a street vendor, then headed for the gate, and was the last person allowed inside before they closed the gates for the day. It was still raining, but had become just a trickle, so I maneuvered the steps and toured around as much as I could without becoming soaked to the bone. Sunshine would have certainly helped my view, and would have given me much more to work with for a painting.
I remember saying to myself, “Where are those umbrella salesmen when you need them?” As I found my way out of the Coliseum, there they were. I purchased my 5 Euro umbrella, and was able to walk back through the ruins of ancient Rome to the place I would pick up the bus back to the hotel.

Instead of trying to make this into a bright and sunny painting, I decided to just paint it like I saw it, remembering the events of the day and the dreary weather. I did not plan to make it a prize winner, but more a memory of what was.
