Color Purple-Study in Negative Space

by Amby
(India)

Taking Mary Ann's suggestion on creating negative space (crumpling thin plastic sheet on wet paintings), this drawing was attempted. Your comments would be most useful.

Using Negative Space

This watercolor was developed using masking tape. Analogous colors were chosen for better visual effect so as to place them adjacently without creating too large a contrast. Your comments would be gratefully received.

Forest Fire by Amby

Wanted to show stark white spaces (using masking fluid) against colourful background. Have used purple colour to paint the shadows on the tree trunk to get the third dimension. Your comments would be most helpful.

Creating the negative space first and working on the shapes to give the necessary depth by painting the shadows. Don't know how far I have succeeded in this. Your comments would be very useful in my learning curve.

Forest Fire Round 3

by Amby
(India)

Keeping the helpful comments of Mary Ann, I have reworked this painting. The original entitled "Forest Fire" was painted a little earlier to the unfortunate tragedy of the forest fire in Australia.
I dedicate this as remembrance to those who had suffered during this tragedy: humans, birds, animals and the trees of the forest. What a destruction to the wealth and life Nature had lovingly created.

Thank you Mary Ann for your constructive and focused comments on my last two submissions. I have become bold with your support and have ventured into the negative space with some details this time.

As I started working on the negative space, these shapes emerged to give me a title to this painting. I confess that I did not start to paint this theme but it just got developed as I worked on. Very fascinating experience indeed!

Have been learning on painting using negative space concept. This is one such practice painting. A monochrome using Burnt Sienna with different values for the entire painting.

Comments for improvements are most welcome to improve my learning curve. Thanks.
