reflections
by: MARY ANN

The buildings of Bagno Vignoni are reflected in the large bathing pool of ancient times. Early in the morning the light is cast on the buildings and not on the water, so it was very dark, but the colors of the buildings reflected in its surface. I always lay in my light and bright colors first, then go back in with the darks while the washes are still wet to allow a blending of the colors without hard edges. This was painted on watercolor paper which dries more quickly than the Rtistx board, so I was able to quickly achieve the effect. On Rtistx board, I would have had to be more careful in the application of the darks because the granular surface would allow the dark pigment to continue to creep into the light. That is NOT a negative statement about the Rtistx board. I just have to approach the subject differently than when painting on paper.
