Bernice, this painting is really cute. You have done an outstanding job in capturing the kids, the shading on their faces is great! Keep up the good work.

Wanda, I sketched in lines where I wanted the natural white of the canvas to show and carefully painted around these lines.

wonderful representation
by: Barb

You truly captured little faces-so many artists almost make them look gruesome, but the expressions and shapes are true even though I don't know the children. I might have wanted to see the water in back of them slightly darker and I also love Mary Ann's critique as to the different colors you could add in the flesh tones. You are very, very good Bernice and I enjoy looking at this painting so much. Thanks.

Mary Ann, thank you for the tip,I will try it on
my next painting...also can you give me some suggestions on how to paint darker complexions without the muddy look? Currently I use cad. red light, raw sienna and french ult. blue.

Bernice,
You are doing very well in your representation of the children. But studying skin tones would be helpful. All flesh is made up of many colors. Reflected light plays a huge roll in the color of shadows on the skin. I know you didn't want to make their young faces muddy, but her chin should have some pink in it and his should have some blue (reflected from the jacket). Purple is always a good color and all flesh has tones of green. Using these colors in pale washes would give the portraits some vibrance. Don't be afraid to use water. After all, this is "water" color! Keep painting, and make them passionate!
