Footprints
by: Anonymous

As you can see from Penny Digs painted and submitted BEFORE California girl I DO know better! That was what was so upsetting. Thoe dang things just got away from me! LOL Thanks so much for your comments. I will definitely do some samples before ever attempting footprints again.

Lynne,
If you take a close look at footprints in the sand, the indentions are not totally dark. Of course the shaded area will depend on the time of day and position of the sun, but remember these things:
1. More than likely, one side of the indention will be lighter than the surrounding sand (the sand on the beach...not in the footprint).
2. One side will be darker than the surrounding sand
3. There will be reflected light from some source (you can make it up...you are the artist).
Try painting some sand color on a page and blotting out color with a damp (thirsty) brush to create light prints in the sand. This will leave soft edges around the print. Or...paint the sand around the prints, leaving white paper. Then soften those edges with a thirsty brush. You can then shade one side of the print if needed.
