Wonderful colors.
by: Anonymous

Don,
I really enjoyed seeing all your paintings, because they are not only very well done, but the great variety of color and textures makes them fun to look at.
One thing that makes it easier and less intimidating for me when it comes to drawing freehand for a painting, instead of using something like a grid, is to draw with a watercolor pencil, because to me it takes out the "fear" of "not getting it just right".
Good luck in Texas,
Annika

Using Masking Fluid
by: M Maxell

When using masking fluid, I have great success if I first dip my brush in liquid soap and wipe off the excess. Then dip into my masking fluid (I use Pebeo drawing fludi). Of course, I clean it immediately, but the soap protects the hairs of the brush and I can use a good brush without any difficulty using soap first...

Those fine lines!
by: Alana

Good use of the barter system! Have you tried a dip pen for linework. I can't decide if I like the lines or I'm just stuck on the romance of dip pens. Guess a grease pencil would look just fine beside my dip pens. Your use of color is astonishing and it is where I want to be. Thanks

White grease pencil vs. Maskoid
by: Anonymous

I also protected the crawfish eyes and bumpy areas on the shell bodies and claws. I keep the white China grease pencil sharp with a razor blade. I did not want to ruin my liner brush masking the feelers with maskoid.

Maskoid is a good tool but I rarely use it.
Thanks

Crawfish for Sale

Don,
Your paintings are absolutely amazing! I can well imagine this one took a long time. Other than the feelers, did you block out anything else? How did you keep the grease pencil so sharp? It seems quite a good way to block rather than masking fluid, which is never a perfect solution. Thanks for sharing.
