Finishing Touches

by Dee Ann
(Kerrville TX)

I have been to lots of workshops..great to get one started but they are always over before we get to the finishing touches..you know, the ones that separate the beginners from the pros. Is there a secret?

Dee Ann,
I am not sure what you mean by separating the beginners from the pros...and getting to the finishing touches.
How long are these workshops and do you take other lessons in painting?

You can't expect to learn everything in a workshop. It is only the beginning of learning or it is to give you other ideas of how to approach painting. I always tell my students that if you come away from a workshop with only one new idea that you can utilize in your painting, it is a success.

In order to finish something you started in a workshop, you need to paint everyday....several hours a day. Read books...study my FREE lessons on this site. Eventually it will all come together. Nothing comes overnight. When I began, I painted 10 hours a day...day after day. I was driven to "get it"...and suddenly I did! Don't give up.

Also, until you have painted for a while, don't study with too many different teachers in a short time. Only after you have begun to be comfortable with what you are doing should you take a workshop from another person. Too many cooks spoil the broth. Too many styles and approaches in too short a time will only confuse you. Find an instructor you like and stick with them for a while. Then you can study with another artist. And, like I said, utilize the lessons on this site. There is a lot of information here. And I keep adding it from time to time. Good luck.
