my favorite painting in Tuscany
by: Mary Ann

I fell in love with Pienza immediately. It is a small village, high on a hill, and it has a walled walkway around it so that you can see the surrounding landscape. There were many subjects for painting; beautiful window boxes with bright flowers, interesting doors and windows, an old church where “The English Patient” was filmed. We had to remember that all stores and restaurants close from noon ‘til 3 p.m., so it was important to order our lunch before that lest we starve!

This is my favorite painting of all the ones I did there. I tried to be free, with deliberate strokes and make it as colorful as possible. All the ancient cities are built with a very drab color in the walls. I had to remember to add colors that I might not see, allowing the colors to mingle on the paper for the entertainment of the viewer. The white umbrellas add a break for the eye and create a focal point in the distance.
