Aug 14, 2008 Rating Creating color and light in a high contrast setting by: Mary Ann The central square in Massa Marittima, Italy, is a dramatic setting in morning. The white umbrellas of the restaurants shine dramatically against the dark buildings. Rather than painting the buildings in a dark flat color, which would have been dull, I chose to use every earthy color on my palette, with lots of water on my brush to help the color be light in some areas and dark in others. The variation of hue and value here makes the painting more dramatic while keeping a strong contrast against the umbrellas.
