Thank you both...Yes I chose a hard subject to paint only because it is what I know best 8-)
That is what I am learning now is about the frisket, and trying to figure out how dark to make my paint mixture as they dry lighter but how light is what I have to figure out by trial and error. I will look for the book mentioned and keep practicing! Thanks for the tips as I learn how to paint

There is a liquid rubber that you can paint on where you want to save your whites. It rubs off later. I think of watercolor as painting from light to dark. We paint a light underpainting and then paint the darker colors on top. Oil painting is just the opposite. We paint the darks and then paint light on top.

I found this book that might help: http://www.amazon.com/Animals-Watercolor-Marilyn-Grame/dp/1560100516
Another one was available that was really beautiful but it was a staggering $132.86 on sale! Original price was over $230.
My suggestion to you is to first learn to use watercolor and think backwards from painting in oil. Practice painting landscapes and other less demanding things before you tackle specifics like animals, etc. Changing mediums is a difficult thing. I recently tried my hand at acrylics with a palette knife! What a change from watercolor. I still think watercolor is easier! Good luck
