Fog and Mist in a Landscape
by: Susan Cramer

To create a look of fog or mist use these simple steps. First find your light source, this will give you a starting point. Light can be gray, white, yellow, blue, purple or green. Make sure to start with a paint color that is almost white looking by the naked eye. You will only notice the color when next to a pure white. I start in the center with this light color, adding more of the given color, and black as I move outward in a circluar or linear motion getting darker as I move away from the light source. Cool colors typically represent a fog or mist. When adding backgound images to your landscape such a trees or mountains, apply the same technique. Images farther way are going to be the lightest of the palet gradually getting darker as they appear closer in perspective.

Painting Mist & Fog
by: MARY ANN

That is a good idea. I will try to work on that suggestion soon. For starters, though, mist and fog create a cool dominance on the paper. So the use of blue mixed with a complement to create a gray is the first step. When painting mist and fog, there is little color in the landscape, so any subject matter that you add will also be on the cool side. Any warm colors should be grayed down so that they do not pop out at you.
