Sunshine For Your Heart

by Donna Pierce-Clark
(Springfield, Ohio)

As I painted this little still life, I thought of my parents, now both passed on. The monarch is special because my mother died at the time of fall migration of the monarchs here in Ohio. I took a walk the day of her passing, and in a tree overhead were thousands upon thousands of monarchs. She always called me her "little sunshine."

This is done with watercolor and gouache on 300lb Arches cold press. I am using more gouache now as the opaques have opened up my world of painting. They give me more freedom to be creative. As well, the Quiller palette of complements is affecting my artwork, I believe, in a positive manner.

Gouache and Watercolor mixed
by: Donna Pierce-Clark

Mary Ann,

Thank you for the high rating and the encouraging comments. I am enjoying this feature you have added to your website. I REALLY do feel set free to paint now that I am using a mixed media approach. My earlier teachers, especially my fabulous art teacher in high school taught me strict transparent watercolor and nothing else. It has been 40+ years to break away from that!

If others would like to see my weekly paintings, they can go to my website and sign up to receive my weekly newsletter. It's "almost" as fun as this one!

Donna, This is stunning! And I can tell it was from your heart. I am so much in favor of trying new things and I applaud you for mixing transparents with gouache. I haven't done that so much but am using newer surfaces. It really expands the mind to try new things.
