Tahoe Sunset
by: Mary Ann

This is certainly a lovely view, and maybe it is the canvas board that didn't allow your sunset color to show through. Canvas is for acrylics and oils. Watercolor canvas hasn't been around very long, and even it requires heavier pigment to establish stronger color. I doubt that you were using watercolor canvas.

When you paint any landscape, always begin with the warmest colors first...the yellows and reds. Try Quinacridone Gold first, then a wash of Opera while the gold is still wet. These colors should flow over the entire page. Allow these colors to dry, then add your blue for the sky and even down into the water, as water reflects the sky. Don't be shy with your pigments, especially in a sunset when color is the most dramatic.

I would like to see this painting done again, on a good quality watercolor paper. Dampen the paper on both sides and lay it down on a non-absorbent surface. Then apply your color. It will flow nicely and the paper will stay damp enough to prevent brush strokes from showing. Keep the support for the paper tilted at least 10 to 15 degrees. I think you will be much more pleased with your effort.
I agree that painting can make you happy. You get lost in the process and it is euphoric. Keep it up!
