Texas Longhorn
by: MARY ANN

Alana,
Instead of a knife, you can use the edge of a credit card or the base of an aquarelle brush that has a slanted edge. If you use a knife, try a dull one, or you might cut into the paper too much.

AND THANK YOU DON, for offering your helpful comments. We all learn from each other.

Scraping with knife
by: Don Cobb

The paper needs to be wet, but not too wet. Let the wash dry to the point where there is no sheen on surface. The knife does not need to be real sharp. Practice scraping on a scrap piece of watercolor paper first, just scrape lightly.

Thanks for sharing

I'm 2nd year watercolor and lean to your style. It was such a rush to look at your longhorn painting and actually understand what you did before you told me. I'll ask my husband for his pocket knife!

Scraping with knife
by: Don Cobb

I did not use any masking fluid on this painting. The small highlighted branches were created using a pocket knife blade. Paper can not be too dry or too wet. Grass underneath cattle done with knife scraping also and grass seeds and leaves protected with grease pencil.

Wow! You will not have any trouble selling your art! You have done a great job with these cows. GOOD LUCK in your art career. You are obviously not a beginner.
