The Cripple's Smile

by John LI
(Hong Kong)

This painting was finished about ten years ago and it represents my concerns of Old and Retired People. I felt sad and sorry for those people who have been contributing their whole life for the society and once they become old and retired, it seems that no one will ever remember them again. However, I would like to bring the beauty of them and their spirit of hardworking will last forever.

Thanks to Mary Ann

Thanks to Mary Ann for your supports and encouragement. I don't really think too much how people think or interput my works. I would only work and forcus on my theme and try hard to develop those ideas deeper and wider. I might explain to some reporters when they are coming to interveiw me and I am always standing around in the exhibition hall in case some people who would like to know me and my works more.

It is nice that you think of older people and their adjustment to life in retirement. It is also nice to hear it from the artist rather than some curator in a museum whom I am never sure didn't just make up the story! Have you ever stood around (incognito) when your paintings were on exhibit and listened to some person guiding a group and explaining what you were thinking when you painted a piece, or how you painted it....only to know that they don't know what they are talking about?
