Tower in the Sky
by: Mary Ann

David,

For a beginner you did rather well. Most beginners are shy with color and their paintings are washed out. There are several pointers however, that you need to know....about design.
First, water always seeks a level and does not go uphill. So you need to flatten the horizon.
Second, the edge of the tree and the edge of the tower are in tangent....meaning that they are on the same plane. The tree needs to move behind or in front of the tower a bit and come out on the other side. Frankly I would show a few leaves near the top of the tower and behind the tower to frame it.

Third: You have nice colors in your clouds, but they lead the eye off the page on the diagonal. Be careful of strong diagonal passages that lead to the corners of the painting. You want something that carries the eye around the painting...and not off the edge, if possible.
Why don't you paint this again and see if you can correct the design errors. I am sure that it will be a success. Even the third time can be a charm... I have often had to start over. Then you can compare the two. Please upload your next one when it is finished.
