Travel Journal Painting supplies

by Sandra
(San Diego)

I am interested in your set up and supplies you use for creating your lovely Travel Journals. I carry in my purse at least a small sketchbook, drawing pencil and kneaded eraser to do impromptu sketches. I also have a little tote bag with a larger sketchbook and a few more drawing supplies.

However I would love to be able to paint in watercolors on the go. How do you manage to have your painting supplies with you? In the car? in the restaurant?, etc. I love the idea.

Sandra, I wear a fanny pack. It is actually the Outward Hound Day-Hike Fanny Pack for people that jog with their dog. It has two water containers and is large enough to hold a small palette of paints, tubes of extra paint, a small camera, brushes, identification, etc. It might also hold a very small sketchbook.

Of course my travel journals are much larger. I have been known to sit in a restaurant (when traveling alone) and sketch people with my brush and paints. I am careful not to stare in any one direction so that no one realizes that I am looking at them!

The palette is a small one that you can purchase at a craft store. It comes with small plastic jars with lids (probably for acrylics so they don't dry out). I squeeze paint from tubes into the jars and replace the lids and off I go. There are two slanted surfaces in the center for mixing paint.

I also carry a few good paper towels or kleenex tissue in the fanny pack for the restaurant paper napkins just dissolve if they get too wet.

I hope this helps. Pack your stuff and get going! It is fun.
