Negative Shapes
by: Mary Ann

Amby, Try this for creating negative shapes. If you have some plastic wrap, tear off a sheet, wad it up in your hands, then flatten it out just a bit. Apply it to a wet wash of color. Allow it to dry, or at least set up enough so that the wet color with not run back into itself. You can stretch the plastic while it is on the wash, and watch the shapes change. When you see something you like, allow it to dry. Peel off the plastic, and paint back into the negative shapes that you see. You can change those shapes, or paint over some of the shapes if they are not needed. I found this helpful when I was learning to see negative shapes. Now they just come naturally. All it takes is PRACTICE!
