USQ University of Southern Queensland. Fixing the Fence

Australain farmer fixing the fence.

This watercolour was painted in a Demonstration at McGregger Summer School USQ for the students. All the students did a good job on thier paintings and once I had shown them the drawing lines of the figure they found it easier than even a landscape. My Husband posed for the photo that I used at the University.

Thank you Drew yes I took on board all that you said and plan to paint it again sometime. I am always telling my students not to have something facing out ( e.g. in this case the dog.) that is the trouble when working from 2 different photo's the fence was made up that is properly why I am in trouble there and my husband posed for me so not ideal and the dog was another photo. I REALLY appreciate your COMMENTS>

fencing the fencer
by: drew

It is an awkward viewpoint, with just a foreground and only the hint of perspective in the fence . The shadows are confusing and "competing" sand the doc looks away out of frame. i would have arranged the dog to look back at the fencer, to triangulate the image and darw the eye back into the triangle of of the vertical element of the fencer, the fence and the dog. The hierarchy sems alittle like a Chinese image all vertical and little "depth" not using "tonal" , because the flat single wash is almost like an airbrushed magazine image, removed from context. Of course artistic licence provoikes different ways of representation. the patterning of the jeans and shadows is very tricky and could have been done by accumulated glazes(but of in a class setting time would have been limited. despite these "bricks", it is difficult subject and and an interesting result.

About Drawing lines.
by: Anonymous

Drawing lines is just that but more than lines e.g. sticking to an outline say in the this case around the figure. I teach shapes triangles, circles elipses, and contour drawing. The best book is drawing on the right hand side of the brain by Betty Edwards.

I love this painting but I do not understand when you say drawing lines? I am a beginner and look for all the information I can.
Thank you.
