Watercolor Lessons

By Mary Ann Boysen

For the past decade I have been teaching watercolor lessons across the USA (including Alaska, Sanibel, Naples, Hilton Head, Kiawah Island, Steamboat Springs) and around the world (San Miguel, Mexico; Paris, Giverny, Provence, France; Tuscany, Venice, Greece and Turkey; Hawaii, Trinidad, in the Caribbean, and the most recent, South Africa and Sparrow Village).

I've taken students with me on these trips so they can learn watercolor painting while seeing some of the most amazing subjects in person. I get a great deal of pleasure out of seeing the world and seeing my students learn in these interesting environments outside of the classroom.

But not everyone can fit these travels into their schedule, or budget. And I can't travel to all of the places that request that I come to teach. So, I've decided to provide watercolor painting lessons on this site. Hopefully, this website will help you get started.

Watercolor Painting in 12 Steps

  1. Lesson 1: Learn About Paper and Brushes

  2. Lesson 2: Value Scale

  3. Lesson 3: Stretching Watercolor Paper

  4. Lesson 4: Painting Watercolor Horizons

  5. Lesson 5: Dramatic Skies

  6. Lesson 6: Watercolor Painting without Drawing

  7. Lesson 7: Negative Shapes and Perspective

  8. Lesson 8: Brightening the Winter Watercolor Landscape

  9. Lesson 9: Watercolor Glazing (layering paint for effect)

  10. Lesson 10: Watercolor Figures and Faces

  11. Lesson 11: Watercolor Painting Crystal

  12. Lesson 12: Watercolor Painting Lace

  13. Four Part Demo (Landscape with Building)

For those of you who are interested in the new trend in watercolor painting on canvas, I've written an ebook on this very subject. I cover many techniques in this book that apply to canvas.
