With Blinders On

Recently visited Savannah, GA and saw these horses that pull tourist carriages. I found the harnessing very interesting and fun to paint, especially with watercolor. Was advised by Mary Ann in reference to another animal painting to use a very light ultramarine blue underwash to provide more realism and depth to the coat. May not show up on this digital photo, but in the "flesh" the coats look like you could "feel" them. Haven't painted much lately - need to keep at it.

I also have a similar painting from Charleston. Those horses are magnificent. You did a nice job. Next time try just painting the horses' heads up close. This makes for better design.
