I have been painting for just a few years, off and on, since I retired. Painted a number of landscapes, street scenes, etc. But, I really enjoy painting animals, especially people's pets. This is my daughter's dog, Zander. If I can master skin tones, I want to try portraits.

Beautiful job. The texture makes me want to pet him, and the eyes are wonderfully expressive.

You are very brave to tackle painting animals when you have only been painting for a short while. You did a nice job with the softness of his coat. To make things more interesting, you might try adding more complementary colors to the underlying washes just to add some interest. Try this on a scrap piece of watercolor paper: paint a light wash of blue or purple and allow it to dry. Then add the local color of the animal's coat, skipping small areas to let the base coat glow through. Or, you can add these complementary colors in the shaded areas of the animals coat. It just makes a painting have a little more "zing" to the viewer's eye.

Oh my goodness! I believe you captured Zander perfectly! Those eyes are precious, and I feel like I've known him for years! Great job!
